2009 Prognostication Quiz: Questions 11 of 14, Baseball

The Yankees Suck Win! They bested the Phillies in the World Series last night, which means that the answer to Question 11 of the 2009 Prognostication Quiz is C. American League in 6 games.

Answer C was by far the most popular answer for Question 11, chosen by 18 of the 43 entrants:

Pete C.
Zoe
Larry
Ben
Stephanie
Adrian
Michael
Missy
Jan
Kevin
Leanne
Ellen
Zhiqi
Sarah
Cameron
Russell
Greg
Eric

Eliminations

Four people were eliminated by question 11:
Ekrem
Pamela
Ana
Jeremiah

And while the hurricane season doesn't officially end until the end of the month (and despite Ida's upgrade to hurricane strength), we would still need three more hurricanes to get out of answer A. I can tentatively eliminate these five (though a miraculous concentration of hurricane activity this month would resurrect some):
Stephanie
Grant
Missy
Tina
Leanne

Leaderboard

That brings us down to just five people with a chance of winning based on Question 13 (Dow Jones Index) and Question 14 (Minnesota Snowfall):

7 Ted
6 Matthew
6 Pete C.
6 Zoe
5 Larry

Zoe was tied with her husband Ted until he pulled away on Question 9, but she has stayed within striking distance. To win, though, she needs the Dow to drop back below 8500, which doesn't seem likely. Pete C. has had an impressive run, too, but he would also need the Dow to fall quite a bit (to under 9000). Additionally, both Pete and Zoe picked E on question 14 along with Ted, so they will need tiebreaking help, too.

My father, Larry, has had the longest run of any member of my family in this year's quiz (my three siblings were eliminated with the current question), but he is a very dark horse. He needs to get both of the final answers correct just to tie Ted and then has to best him in the tiebreaker.

Most likely, then, this has come down to a final fight between Ted and Matthew. Ted will win outright (no need for tiebreaking) if the Dow ends the year where it is right now (between 9500 and 10,000). If the Dow continues to climb and ends the year over 10,000, Matthew has the advantage because he picked a lower snowfall amount (Minnesota has had less than average snowfall to date) which makes him more likely to win either by getting both answers correct or by winning the tiebreaker. It should be an exciting finish! Hold on to your hats!

The Basement

Sadly, Rachel H. did not correctly predict the World Series result and thus seems rather unlikely to win even a single point in this year's quiz. She would need either a precipitous drop in the Dow or a slightly above average year of snowfall for Minnesota. If she holds on, she would beat the current record holder for low score in a quiz. (I have the dubious distinction of having scored just one point last year.) Rachel's feat would be all the more impressive since there are two additional questions this year, too. Go, Rachel, go!

  2. Rooting for her to get a point? Or rooting her to win the award for worst performance?

  3. Where are the full rankings. Since I'm no longer dead last I'm still interested. What's the prize for for 17th place??!!

Rooting for her to get a point but apparently that didn't happen with the most recent question. Still, Go Rachel H.

Can You Cross Your Toes?

Katie and I had a heated discussion the night before last. We were sitting on the couch watching Jon Stewart when she noticed a large, apparently cancerous growth sticking out of the bottom of my foot. She asked what the big lump in my sock was. "That's my toe," I responded, nonplussed. I had crossed my first and second toes, causing a lump to protrude from the bottom of my sock. Katie was quite alarmed. "You can cross your toes?" "Sure, can't you? Everyone can cross their toes!" "Of course I can't cross my toes. Who can cross their toes?" And I confirmed that Katie could not, in fact, cross her toes. Even manipulating her toes with my fingers, I could not get her toes to stay crossed. She just has very short toes. That led, of course, into a discussion of who was the freak. Were my long, crossable toes abnormal, or were her stubby, uncrossable phalanges the outliers? In case you're confused, here are some pictures. First, of my v

Leagalize drugs!

The Economist has a wonderful editorial this week about legalizing drugs. I wholeheartedly agree that the world will be better off by far if the United States legalized, taxed, and regulated illicit drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, and heroin. The goods that will come from legalization: 1. We will save the $40 billion the US spends trying to eliminate the supply of drugs. 2. We will save the costs involved in incarcerating so many drug offenders (as well as gain their productivity in society). 3. We will gain money through taxation on the legal drug trade. 4. Legalized drugs will be regulated, and thus purer and safer to take. 5. With all these savings, we will have lots of money to spend on treating drug addiction as a public health issue rather than as a law and order issue. We will have lots of money to fund treatment programs for addicts that are ensnared by the easier availability of drugs. 6. We will prevent tens of thousands of killings in countries that produce drugs when proc

2017 Prognostication Quiz FINAL POST: Questions 10 and 11, Stocks and Quakes

In the last post , I pointed out that Matthew D. and I were in a two-way tie at the top of the leaderboard with me holding the edge over him in the tiebreaker. For Matthew D. to have a chance to come from behind and grab the win, some significant December movement would be needed in one of three areas: the stock market, world earthquakes, or a convenient death. Here's what happened: 10. Stocks (December 29) How will stocks do in this first year of Trumponomics? Will the Dow Jones Industrial Average be up or down compared to the final close of 2016? Which way will the Dow go? a. Up b. Down The Dow Jones continued to rise throughout the month. I maintained my advantage in the tie-breaker. 11. Earthquake (December 31) How many big earthquakes (magnitude 8.0 or larger on the Richter scale) will there be this year? (Big earthquake counts from this millennium are indicated in parentheses.) How many big earthquakes will there be this year? a. None (2) b. One (7) c. Two (4) d. Th
