My compulsion with hoarding

I stayed at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge for the six days I was in the Boston area. They had very generous small bottles of shampoo and conditioner. I sequestered mine each day so that housekeeping would provide me with more. I collect them and take them home because Katie thinks it is fun to collect hotel hospitality items in a large basket on the off chance that we have an overnight guest who is eager to try 37 varieties of body lotion after his or her shower.

When I was packing my bag at the end of the week, though, I remembered that carry-on luggage is limited to 3 oz. of gels and liquids. I didn't have room for even one of the bottles.

I wonder what the housekeeper thought when they got to my room and saw ten bottles of shampoo and conditioner lined up like toy soldiers on the bureau.
Wanting to get credit for being a thoughtful husband, I told Katie that I had collected the incidentals for her, but that I had to abandon them due to the strict FAA guidelines. She didn't seem to think I deserved that much credit: "In other words, you'll collect the bottles, but you don't love me enough to check your suitcase so you can actually deliver them to me." Touche.

    Hate to tell you, but it is 3oz per bottle, not 3oz total. They just all need to fit in a 1 quart Ziploc bag.

Katie and I had a heated discussion the night before last. We were sitting on the couch watching Jon Stewart when she noticed a large, apparently cancerous growth sticking out of the bottom of my foot. She asked what the big lump in my sock was. Leagalize drugs!

The Economist has a wonderful editorial this week about legalizing drugs. I wholeheartedly agree that the world will be better off by far if the United States legalized, taxed, and regulated illicit drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, and heroin. The goods that will come from legalization: 1. We will save the $40 billion the US spends trying to eliminate the supply of drugs. 2. We will save the costs involved in incarcerating so many drug offenders (as well as gain their productivity in society). 3. We will gain money through taxation on the legal drug trade. 4. Legalized drugs will be regulated, and thus purer and safer to take. 5. With all these savings, we will have lots of money to spend on treating drug addiction as a public health issue rather than as a law and order issue. We will have lots of money to fund treatment programs for addicts that are ensnared by the easier availability of drugs. 6.
