2011 Prognostication Quiz: Question 13-15, Death

The elder statesman of the the 2011 Prognostication Quiz has passed on. Colonel Potter of M*A*S*H retires to the great Korean war in the sky. That makes A. Harry Morgan a correct answer on Question 13-15 of the quiz.

Leaderboard

This death has a profound effect on the leaderboard. What was a four-way race just two weeks ago has been winnowed down to two. Russell will pull even with Marcus and best him in the tiebreaker if the Dow ends the year between 12,361.5 and 12,499.99. Otherwise, Marcus wins. The Dow has not been higher than 12,200 since late July, but some good news from Congress or Europe could easily set it rising in the last two weeks of the year. If Zsa-zsa Gabor (in and out of the hospital all year) finally buys the farm, Russell would expand his winning range and win if the Dow finished anywhere above 12,000.

Megan, Paul, Adrian, and Stacey are all dark horses but could still win if the Dow ends between 11,500 and 12,000 AND something special happens: Megan needs Iran to conduct a nuclear test, Paul needs Ravi Shankar to advance to his next incarnation, Stacey needs the Euro to break apart, and Adrian needs Kirk Douglas or Billy Graham to stop breathing.

Two and a half weeks left!

Back down here at the bottom, Nadir may finally get a little bit of luck! He has chosen the Dow to end between 12,000 and 12,500, which is where the Dow is right now. Will he hang on and win his first and only point of the year? We have a photo finish at the top AND at the bottom!

At least I have the comfort of having my loving wife down near the bottom with me!

"The Dow has not been higher than 12,200 since late July"

Not anymore... at 12294 it is now at its highest value since July 27th... having shot up over 500 points in 4 days of trading... I'm really regretting missing that hurricane question now (but in my defense on that question, there were a lot of tropical storms and the hurricane to tropical storm ratio was abnormally low).

Can You Cross Your Toes?

Katie and I had a heated discussion the night before last. We were sitting on the couch watching Jon Stewart when she noticed a large, apparently cancerous growth sticking out of the bottom of my foot. She asked what the big lump in my sock was. "That's my toe," I responded, nonplussed. I had crossed my first and second toes, causing a lump to protrude from the bottom of my sock. Katie was quite alarmed. "You can cross your toes?" "Sure, can't you? Everyone can cross their toes!" "Of course I can't cross my toes. Who can cross their toes?" And I confirmed that Katie could not, in fact, cross her toes. Even manipulating her toes with my fingers, I could not get her toes to stay crossed. She just has very short toes. That led, of course, into a discussion of who was the freak. Were my long, crossable toes abnormal, or were her stubby, uncrossable phalanges the outliers? In case you're confused, here are some pictures. First, of my v...

Rebus Challenge 1

When I was a young tyke, I would write notes to my mother. What made me a little odd for your typical grade-schooler is that I often wrote them in code of one sort or another. Included in this correspondence (and stored for posterity by my mother) was a series of rebus puzzles, which turn out actually to be a combination of rebus and homophone and occasional other literary tricks. I present the first in the rebus series in honor of my mother's birthday, which was yesterday. (My siblings and Katie and I took her out to IHOP for dinner, which my mother chose because she once worked at IHOP as a waitress and wanted to reminisce. We didn't run into any of the people Mom worked with 45 years ago.) Can you figure out my birthday message below? (Click for a larger image.) Favorite part #1: That I drew a picture of a cat with a huge X through it to depict our dead pet Siamese cat, Happy. Favorite part #2: That my map of Asia, while including a disclaimer that it is not to scale, has tw...
