2009 Prognostication Quiz: Post 3 of 14

The favored Pittsburgh Steelers had to come from behind with less than a minute remaining in the game in order to best the Arizona Cardinals. It was an exciting game, but it is even more exciting for the 2009 Prognostication Quiz! We now have a sole leader, as Tina has gone 3-for-3 in the first three questions.

These Steelers fans each get one point for picking D on Question 3:
Tina
Leanne
Zoe
Pamela
Gloria

It's a bitter pill for Pete C. to swallow. He was the only person to have predicted Arizona's amazing list of upsets in the playoffs, and he would have taken the presumptive lead had Arizona held on to its fourth-quarter lead. Instead, he's now two points behind the leader.

Leaderboard:
Tina (3)
Stephanie (2)
Leanne (2)
Ted (2)
Jeremiah (2)
Peter M. (2)
Heather (2)

22 people have 1 point, and 14 people (including me) have 0 points. We still have lots of events coming up! It's still really anyone's game, with 11 questions to go.

Question 4 update: As more members of the Academy have leaked their votes, Slumdog Millionaire seems to be increasing its lead. It's now trading at 82% likely to happen on Intrade.com. Here's a leaderboard of predicted final score with that incorporated:

1. Stephanie
2. Tina
3. Leanne
4. Pete C.
5. Ted
6. Jeremiah
7. Kevin
8. Jan
9. Zoe
10. Peter M.
11. Pamela
12. Heather
13. Ellen
14. Katie
15. Gloria

Question 12 update: January snowfall in MN was 8.4 inches, which is below the average of 10.9 inches. Those who predicted a lower-than-average snowfall may be a bit ahead! That includes Heather, Ellen, and Gloria on the leaderboard above.

Next up is the Academy Awards on Sunday, February 22. Stay tuned!

Comments

  1. Darnit, I think Boston had more snowfall in a 24-hour period a couple of weeks back then MN had all month.

  2. Why am I #2 on the predicted list? Even if Stephanie gets it right and I get it wrong, we're tied. So why is she at the top? Is this some sort of passive agressive manifestation of your extreme jealousy of my successful prognosticating? Hmph.

  3. Stephanie is on top because she had more answers down the road that matched with what more other people guessed. It's not probably the best predictor of long-term success in the quiz, but it amuses me.

Can You Cross Your Toes?

Katie and I had a heated discussion the night before last. We were sitting on the couch watching Jon Stewart when she noticed a large, apparently cancerous growth sticking out of the bottom of my foot. She asked what the big lump in my sock was. "That's my toe," I responded, nonplussed. I had crossed my first and second toes, causing a lump to protrude from the bottom of my sock. Katie was quite alarmed. "You can cross your toes?" "Sure, can't you? Everyone can cross their toes!" "Of course I can't cross my toes. Who can cross their toes?" And I confirmed that Katie could not, in fact, cross her toes. Even manipulating her toes with my fingers, I could not get her toes to stay crossed. She just has very short toes. That led, of course, into a discussion of who was the freak. Were my long, crossable toes abnormal, or were her stubby, uncrossable phalanges the outliers? In case you're confused, here are some pictures. First, of my v...

Rebus Challenge 1

When I was a young tyke, I would write notes to my mother. What made me a little odd for your typical grade-schooler is that I often wrote them in code of one sort or another. Included in this correspondence (and stored for posterity by my mother) was a series of rebus puzzles, which turn out actually to be a combination of rebus and homophone and occasional other literary tricks. I present the first in the rebus series in honor of my mother's birthday, which was yesterday. (My siblings and Katie and I took her out to IHOP for dinner, which my mother chose because she once worked at IHOP as a waitress and wanted to reminisce. We didn't run into any of the people Mom worked with 45 years ago.) Can you figure out my birthday message below? (Click for a larger image.) Favorite part #1: That I drew a picture of a cat with a huge X through it to depict our dead pet Siamese cat, Happy. Favorite part #2: That my map of Asia, while including a disclaimer that it is not to scale, has tw...
