Texas Longhorns beat Oklahoma Sooners

Yesterday, Katie and I went to visit our friends Liz and Jeff who threw a football party to watch the Texas Longhorns, Jeff's college football team (#5 in the country), try to beat the more highly regarded Oklahoma Sooners (#1 in the country).

Jeff is really into his football team. Check out his pre-party blog entry with him and his children all decked out. It went even further than pictured, though, in that he also drew a large orange steer head on his daughter's belly and then had her showing off to all the guests.

Jeff encouraged everyone to join him in wearing burnt orange and white, the colors of the Longhorns. I tend toward the obnoxious, however, so I thought it would be fun to wear Oklahoma's red and white instead. Then I thought, why not do one better?

I am a big fan of eBay for acquiring a wide variety of consumer goods, but it does have the drawback of being slow. When I want some random item fast, there's nothing like the Mall of America and its 4.3 miles of store front.

A little research confirmed that there is a shop at the Megamall that specializes in college attire from across the country. I sent an email to confirm that they had Oklahoma attire, then drove out to the mall on Friday afternoon. The store actually had quite a variety of Sooner attire: three t-shirts styles and three types of jersey in addition to the long-sleeved shirt I chose. It was a big hit at the party. Most people assumed I had some connection to Oklahoma, and I got to tell them that I was really just being a jerk. Here's a nice picture of Jeff and baby David in Longhorn attire with me in my Sooner shirt:

I didn't actually have the heart to root for the Sooners, though, and it was exciting to see the underdog Longhorns pull off a late come-from-behind 45-35 victory. Based on their big win, the Longhorns are now #1 in the ranking polls, and the Sooners have dropped to #4.

Jeff mooted the possibility of throwing another football party later in the season. That's going to get expensive for me, though. Jeff gets to wear the same clothes, but I need to buy a new jersey for each game.

Can You Cross Your Toes?

Katie and I had a heated discussion the night before last. We were sitting on the couch watching Jon Stewart when she noticed a large, apparently cancerous growth sticking out of the bottom of my foot. She asked what the big lump in my sock was. "That's my toe," I responded, nonplussed. I had crossed my first and second toes, causing a lump to protrude from the bottom of my sock. Katie was quite alarmed. "You can cross your toes?" "Sure, can't you? Everyone can cross their toes!" "Of course I can't cross my toes. Who can cross their toes?" And I confirmed that Katie could not, in fact, cross her toes. Even manipulating her toes with my fingers, I could not get her toes to stay crossed. She just has very short toes. That led, of course, into a discussion of who was the freak. Were my long, crossable toes abnormal, or were her stubby, uncrossable phalanges the outliers? In case you're confused, here are some pictures. First, of my v...

Rebus Challenge 1

When I was a young tyke, I would write notes to my mother. What made me a little odd for your typical grade-schooler is that I often wrote them in code of one sort or another. Included in this correspondence (and stored for posterity by my mother) was a series of rebus puzzles, which turn out actually to be a combination of rebus and homophone and occasional other literary tricks. I present the first in the rebus series in honor of my mother's birthday, which was yesterday. (My siblings and Katie and I took her out to IHOP for dinner, which my mother chose because she once worked at IHOP as a waitress and wanted to reminisce. We didn't run into any of the people Mom worked with 45 years ago.) Can you figure out my birthday message below? (Click for a larger image.) Favorite part #1: That I drew a picture of a cat with a huge X through it to depict our dead pet Siamese cat, Happy. Favorite part #2: That my map of Asia, while including a disclaimer that it is not to scale, has tw...
